AfriCoast Consulting Engineers is one of Africa's leading independent multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy firms. Headquartered in Nelson Mandela Bay, the firm specialises in the design and implementation of all major engineering disciplines: civil engineering (water, sanitation, roads, transportation - port, road and rail - and storm water), structural engineering (buildings, bridges, water retaining structures and wind turbine bases), environmental management and infrastructure management in South Africa.

Since its inception in 2000, AfriCoast Consulting Engineers has delivered projects collectively worth well over R300-billion for its client base.

AfriCoast Consulting Engineers provides solutions that are responsive, innovative and strategically planned and implemented against world-class standards. The firm is a member of the Consulting Engineers South Africa Association (CESA) and the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC). History

AfriCoast Consulting Engineers was established in 1998 in Port Elizabeth by its current directors, Venance Da Silva and Donald McGillivray, who saw a need for world-class engineering services in the region.

Since then AfriCoast Consulting Engineers has gained a reputation as the go-to engineering firm for out-of-the-box, cost-effective engineering solutions not only in the Eastern Cape, but across South Africa. The multi-disciplinary engineering company has expanded significantly and continues to grow in alignment with the need for key infrastructure and maintenance in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

Our People

Award-winning, industry respected and forward-thinking individuals, including engineers, professional technologists, technicians, CAD operators and administrative support function, ensure the delivery of world-class projects and client service at AfriCoast Consulting Engineers.

More than 40% of our employees are professionally qualified and, on average, have around 20 years' of experience.

Our management team members have more than 35 years’ experience in all aspects of consulting engineering.

Board of Directors

AfriCoast Consulting Engineers is headed by the highly experienced operations team of Chief Operating Officer and executive director William Emslie, and two technical directors, Kevin McRae and Thomas Jachens, along with AfriCoast’s three non-executive directors, founders Venance da Silva and Donald McGillivray, and Bronwyn Boswell, who represents AfriCoast’s equity ownership partner, Engeli Enterprise Development.

Venance is a registered civil and structural engineer, and construction manager, and a past president of the Concrete Society of Southern Africa.

Donald is a registered civil engineer and construction manager with a wealth of experience in the built and natural environments.

Venance and Donald co-founded AfriCoast in 2000, responding with innovative and dynamic engineering solutions to the development opportunities that abounded in the region. The company has since established a reputation for delivering local insight and professional expertise at globally benchmarked levels.




William Emslie (Pr Tech Eng)
Executive Director (Chief Operating Officer)


Bill has been with AfriCoast since its early days, joining the team in 2005. A registered Professional Technologist in Civil Engineering, and armed with a knowledge wealth of more than 45 years’ experience, Bill takes responsibility for the company’s operational, financial and administration activities, driving major projects and contributing to the engineered landscape of southern Africa.



Bronwyn Boswell (BCom)
Non-executive Director


Bronwyn is a B-BBEE Development Consultant for Engeli Enterprise Development, AfriCoast’s equity partner. She adds value to the company’s strategic Enterprise and Socioeconomic Development, helping to ensure AfriCoast’s sustainable and significant role.

Core Management Team


Our highly responsive team of technical directors, project managers and engineers have considerable experience in delivering conventional and turnkey projects, offering the highest levels of scientific, technical and operational expertise. Our core management team, led by COO William Emslie, ensures that tight management and adherence to our service strategy is in place on every project.

Kevin McRae Pr Tech (Eng)
Executive Director


Kevin heads AfriCoast’s Water and Sanitation Division. In over 25 years’, he has chartered the course of an impressive consulting engineering career, specialising in the fields of water and wastewater treatment and supply.



Clarine Coltman (BCom)
Executive Office Manager


Clarine has been a valued member of the AfriCoast team for more than a decade, primarily in the areas of Finance, Human Resources and Administration, and has sound knowledge of both the business and its multi-disciplinary industry.



Thomas Jachens (Pr Eng)
Technical Director


With more than 25 years in the civil engineering industry, Thomas brings extensive experience to his position as technical director of Roads, Transportation, Infrastructure and Civil Engineering at AfriCoast.



Wessel Vosloo (Pr Eng)
Technical Director


Wessel’s extensive list of engineering project involvement since 2002, with a particular focus on concrete-related works, advantageously equips him to manage AfriCoast’s Structural market sector.

 



Rieyaad Salie (NMech)
Manager: Concrete Rehabilitation


Rieyaad’s expertise includes concrete diagnostics investigations, bridge diagnostics and recommendations, and concrete rehabilitation, as well as durability index testing and laboratory services.



Sizani Mrwetyana (BTech: Civil Eng)
Manager: Water & Sanitation


Sizani is Manager of AfriCoast’s demanding Water and Sanitation Division. He has been a valued member of the AfriCoast team since 2006, and has extensive civil engineering experience both in the private and local government environments.



Clement Ofori BA Hons (Soc Sci)
Manager: Environmental


Clement specialises in social research and environmental management, air quality management, feasibility studies, water quality assessments and environmental rehabilitation. Originally from Ghana, he joined AfriCoast in 2008.



Gerrie van de Merwe BTech (Civil)
Manager: General Engineering


Gerrie has over 3 decades’ experience and in the design and construction of roads and stormwater systems, water operations and sewerage, including large diameter sewer main rehabilitation. He has a longstanding involvement with the Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa and has served in various leadership portfolios.



Elsabé Koen
Administration & Finance Manager


A past chairman of the Office Professionals of South Africa (PE), Elsabé is right hand person to AfriCoast’s COO as well as managing staff, office, finance, marketing and ISO quality management responsibilities.
